Blausee, which means blue lake, is a small lake in a wooded side valley near Kandersteg, in the Bernese Oberland, and it is famous for the colour and clarity of its water. The lake is only a few hundred metres across and perhaps ten metres deep, but the water is so clear that the bottom, with fallen tree trunks lying in the depths, is visible from the shore, and the colour shifts between deep blue, turquoise and green with the light and the angle of view. The effect is often described as magical, and it is one of the best-known small attractions of the region. The lake is fed by underground springs, and its clarity comes from the fact that little sediment enters it, so the water remains still and transparent through the year.

The lake and its surroundings form a nature park, run by a private company which manages the grounds, buildings and a trout farm. The park includes forest paths, a stretch of stream, picnic areas and viewpoints, and it protects a stretch of natural woodland on the slopes above. The paths are mostly paved and gently graded, so the park is accessible to families with pushchairs and to wheelchair users, at least along the main routes. Visitors pay an entrance fee, which varies by time of day and season, and dogs must be kept on a lead. Swimming in the lake is not allowed, in order to protect the water and the fish, but small rowing boats can be taken out in season for a closer look at the water.

A legend gives the lake its human story. It tells of a young girl who died of grief and whose tears turned the water blue, and her face is said to be seen in the water on certain days. Legends of this kind are common in the Alps, and this one adds to the romance of the place. Whether or not you believe it, the lake in the early morning light, with mist drifting over the surface, looks like something from a fairy tale.

The trout farm is an attraction in its own right. The clean spring water supports a fish farm, where rainbow trout and other species are raised, and the restaurant at the lake serves them freshly prepared, usually grilled or smoked, along with other regional dishes. A shop sells fish products and local specialities. A short walk leads through the forest, and the park has playgrounds and a small chapel nearby.

The park is a short bus ride from Kandersteg and Frutigen, and the lake is a convenient half-day trip from the village, often combined with the Oeschinensee, the larger lake above Kandersteg. The Blausee is best visited in the morning, before the tour groups arrive, and in autumn when the colours of the trees reflect in the water. It suits families, photographers and nature lovers. Allow one to two hours. Bring a light jacket, since it can be cool in the shade, and check the park's website for opening times and entrance fees.
