Schloss Wildegg stands on a rocky hill above the Aare valley in the canton of Aargau, close to the Habsburg homeland, and it is one of the best-preserved castles in northern Switzerland. The building began as a medieval fortress in the thirteenth century, built by a family of noble servants of the Habsburgs, and it was later extended and altered over many generations. In the late fifteenth century it came to the Effinger family, a prominent Bernese line who owned it for hundreds of years and turned it from a fortress into a comfortable residence.
What makes Wildegg unusual is that it stayed a lived-in house far longer than most castles. The Effinger family and their heirs furnished its rooms over the centuries, and the last of the line left the castle to the Swiss Confederation at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a result, the interiors still hold furniture, paintings, tableware and household objects from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, arranged to show how a noble family lived. Rooms such as the kitchen, dining hall and bedrooms give a good picture of daily life, and the whole castle has a personal feel that is different from a museum of empty halls. Today the site is run by Museum Aargau as one of its heritage properties.
The grounds are part of the attraction. Terraced gardens climb the slope below the castle, and the garden is known for its collection of old and rare fruit, vegetable and ornamental varieties cultivated in the spirit of the historical household. Orchards recall the practical side of a country estate. In autumn the harvest brings colour and activity to the grounds, and in summer the gardens are a quiet place to sit with a view over the valley.
The castle is reached on foot from the railway station at Wildegg in about twenty minutes, along a path that climbs through woods and vineyards, and there is a limited parking area at the top. Opening arrangements vary with season, and guided tours and events are offered at certain times, so check the programme before travelling. The setting makes Wildegg a good family outing, and it combines naturally with a visit to nearby Lenzburg Castle or a walk along the Aare.
