Tucked inside the mountain in the upper Lauterbrunnen Valley, between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg, the Trümmelbach Falls offer a unique subterranean experience unlike any other in Europe. This remarkable attraction features ten glacial waterfalls that drain the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The water originates from a 24-square-kilometer catchment area, with half of it covered in snow and ice, allowing the falls to handle up to 20,000 liters of water per second during peak melt seasons. As part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the site provides a fascinating glimpse into the geological forces shaping the Alps.

Visitors access the falls via a tunnel lift that descends into the rock face, leading to a self-guided route through galleries, bridges, and viewing platforms. The path involves significant stairs and narrow passages, so expect to be sprayed by mist as the powerful water cascades around you. The experience is best suited for those comfortable with steep steps and damp conditions.

The falls are open only in the warmer months, roughly from April to early November, and the flow is strongest in early and midsummer, when snowmelt is at its peak. An entrance fee is charged, and for safety reasons very young children and dogs are not admitted. A bus from Lauterbrunnen stops right at the entrance. Since conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, it is advisable to verify current opening times and ticket availability before your visit.
