Rising 2,970 meters above Mürren, Schilthorn offers a distinct alpine experience centered around its iconic Piz Gloria structure. Visitors reach the summit on the Schilthornbahn cableway, which climbs from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen Valley via Mürren and Birg; its new section up to Mürren is billed as the steepest cable car in the world. The journey provides a gradual ascent into the Bernese Alps, culminating in panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and distant Mont Blanc.
The main attraction is the rotating Piz Gloria restaurant, which slowly turns through a full circle. This mechanical feature allows diners to observe the shifting landscape without leaving their seats. One stop below, at Birg, the Skyline viewing platform and the Thrill Walk, a steel walkway along the cliff face, offer more dizzying vistas. A Walk of Fame nearby honors celebrities who filmed scenes for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service at this location, adding a layer of pop culture history to the natural scenery.
Seasonal activities define the visitor experience here. Winter brings skiing on steep slopes, snowparks, and toboggan safaris, while summer months invite hiking along the flower-filled trails and stopping off at the intermediate stations. The cableway runs year-round apart from maintenance periods, but the last descent is in the late afternoon and weather can close the summit, so check the webcam before setting out. This accessibility makes the summit a popular destination for those seeking high-altitude views without the need for technical climbing skills.
