The Train des Étoiles, the Star Train, is the name given to the rack railway that climbs from Blonay, above Vevey, to Les Pléiades, a summit and viewpoint at about 1,360 metres on the hills that rise from the north shore of Lake Geneva. The mountain takes its name from the Pleiades, the star cluster, and the railway’s nickname plays on that. The line is a short, steep cog railway with a gauge that suits the slopes, and the trains, some of them historic, climb in about twenty minutes from the lower station through woods and meadows to the top.
The journey is the first reward. The track climbs steadily with views opening up over the vineyards of the Lavaux, the lake and the mountains of the Chablais on the French side, in the Vaud and Savoy of France, and in spring the slopes are covered with wild narcissus, which bloom in great drifts in the meadows around Les Pléiades and the nearby villages. The flower season, usually in May, is a famous seasonal event in the region, and a visit at that time gives a spectacular sight of white flowers over the green slopes. In summer, the walk from Blonay to the summit and back by train is a classic family outing, and in autumn and winter the line gives access to forest paths and snowshoe routes.
At the top, a terrace and a mountain restaurant offer panoramic views over Lake Geneva, the Dents du Midi, the Savoy Alps and, on clear days, the long line of the Jura. The restaurant serves regional dishes such as cheese specialities and rösti, and a sunny day on the terrace is one of the pleasures of the area. Paths lead from the summit along the ridge to other viewpoints, and the area is used for hiking, mountain biking and, in winter, sledding and snowshoeing. The clear air and the distance from city lights make the summit a good place to see stars on a dark night, which is the idea behind the railway’s nickname, and special evening trips and events sometimes take advantage of this.
Operating times vary with the season, and some trains run only on certain days, so check the timetable before you go, and be aware that evening and special trains may need booking. Dress warmly, because it can be cool and windy on the summit, and bring sunglasses on a bright day. The railway connects with the narrow-gauge line from Vevey to Blonay, so the whole trip can be made by public transport from the lakeshore.
The train suits families, railway fans, walkers and anyone who wants a gentle mountain outing above Lake Geneva. Go on a clear morning for the views, or in spring for the narcissus.
