The Torrenthorn is a mountain of just under 3,000 metres above Leukerbad, in the Bernese Alps at the western edge of the Gemmi region in the canton of Valais. It is the high point of the ski area that rises from the Torrent and Rinderhütte zones, and its summit is one of the great viewpoints of the Valais. From the top, the panorama stretches across the Rhone valley to the line of the Pennine Alps, with the pyramid of the Matterhorn, the Weisshorn above the Val d’Anniviers and the long chain of the Mischabel peaks standing across the valley, while to the north the glaciers of the Bernese Alps and the walls above the Gemmi Pass rise close at hand.
The mountain is relatively easy to reach by Alpine standards. Lifts carry visitors up from Leukerbad to the Torrent area, and from the upper station a path leads to the summit in a walk that takes a couple of hours on a good trail, with a modest climb over grassy and stony slopes. The route is a standard mountain walk, not a climb, but it goes high enough that weather, altitude and snow need to be taken seriously, and it should be attempted in good conditions. A small mountain hotel near the top has been a base for visitors and walkers for generations, and a night there gives the chance to see sunrise over the Alps. The summit area itself is bare rock and scree, with a cross or marker, and the wind can be strong.
In winter, the mountain is part of a ski area with runs for skiers of all levels, and the upper slopes are open and wide. Summer brings walkers, with a network of trails across the slopes, among them routes to the Gemmi Pass, where a famous path climbs the cliff wall to the Daubensee on the Bernese side. The high meadows in early summer are covered with alpine flowers, and ibex and chamois can be seen on the cliffs. Because Leukerbad is known for its thermal baths, many visitors combine a day on the Torrenthorn with a soak in the hot springs in the afternoon, a classic combination.
Operating times for the lifts and the hotel depend on the season and conditions, so check the schedules and whether the trail to the summit is free of snow. Carry water, sun protection and warm clothing, since conditions at 3,000 metres can change rapidly. The summit is best visited on a clear morning, before clouds build.
The mountain suits walkers of average fitness, photographers and anyone who wants a high Alpine viewpoint without technical climbing. It pairs well with the Leukerbad Thermal Baths and the Gemmi Pass walk.
