Leukerbad is best known for its hot springs, but it also has a small, high ski area on the slopes above the village, centred on the Torrent and the Rinderhütte. The village lies in a high valley in the canton of Valais, at the foot of a great wall of rock that is crossed by the Gemmi Pass, and the ski area climbs the mountain above the village. The runs are mostly on open, wide slopes above the tree line, and there are views across the Rhone valley to the Valais Alps and, on clear days, the peaks of the Bernese Alps.

The area is divided into two main zones. The lower one is around the Rinderhütte, where a gondola from the village arrives, and the slopes here are gentler and suitable for beginners and families, with a dedicated learning area. Higher up, the Torrent area extends toward the Torrenthorn, which rises above the ski area and gives access to the highest runs. This upper section has longer, more challenging pistes for intermediate and advanced skiers, with wide slopes that open up after fresh snow. The total length of the marked slopes is modest compared with the big Alpine resorts, which is part of the charm: queues are generally short, and the mountain feels relaxed.

Snow reliability is helped by altitude and by snowmaking on key runs. As in any ski area, conditions vary through the season, so check the snow report and lift status on the official site before you travel. Beginners’ lessons and rental equipment are available in the village, and mountain restaurants at the Rinderhütte and higher up serve typical Valais dishes, such as raclette and soups, on sunny terraces.

The great advantage of Leukerbad is the après-ski. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the thermal baths in the village, which are heated by natural hot springs that rise from deep underground and range from large public pools to spa facilities with saunas. Soaking in hot water with views of the snowy cliffs is one of the main reasons people choose Leukerbad for a winter break. The village is reached by a road from the Rhone valley and by bus from the railway station at Leuk, and a gondola links the village with the slopes.

The area suits families, beginners, intermediate skiers and snowboarders looking for a quiet resort, and anyone who wants to combine skiing with a spa. It is less suited to experts looking for large, challenging terrain.
