Located in Lucerne, the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz) offers a dynamic exploration of mobility, technology, and culture. As Switzerland’s most visited museum, it functions less as a traditional static exhibit and more as an interactive experience center. The institution traces its roots to 1959, when it was established by Alfred Waldis, evolving from earlier railway collections into a comprehensive hub that covers trains, automobiles, ships, and aircraft.

The halls are devoted to rail, road, air and water transport, with historic locomotives, cars, aircraft and boats on display, plus sections on space travel and communication. Many exhibits are hands-on, which makes the museum especially popular with families. The complex also includes a planetarium, a large-screen film theatre, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure ride and the Hans Erni Museum, devoted to the Lucerne-born artist.

The museum stands on the shore of Lake Lucerne east of the city centre, and the road transport hall, clad in hundreds of road signs, is easy to spot from the street. Plan on at least half a day, and check which attractions, such as the planetarium and film theatre, are included in your ticket. The site serves as both an educational resource and a celebration of human ingenuity in transportation technology.
