The Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke, stands as Lucerne’s most iconic landmark, stretching 204 meters across the Reuss River. As the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, this 14th-century structure crosses the river diagonally, linking the left bank near the Lucerne Theatre with St. Peter’s Chapel on the Old Town side. The bridge is instantly recognizable by its shingled roof and the cycle of triangular 17th-century paintings hung beneath it. These artworks, a tradition documented by chronicler Renward Cysat, depict scenes from Swiss history and local legends, adding rich cultural depth to the visitor experience.
A defining feature of the bridge is the octagonal Water Tower, which stands prominently along the span. Historically serving as a prison, archive, and warehouse, the tower offers a classic photo opportunity alongside the bridge, although the interior is not open to the public. The structure has a resilient history; a major fire in August 1993 destroyed most of the bridge, but it was rebuilt in record time, reopening in April 1994. Many of the paintings were lost in the fire, but the surviving panels were restored and hung again.
Visiting the Chapel Bridge is free and accessible at any time. To fully appreciate the architecture and capture the best photographs without the distraction of large crowds, early morning or late evening visits are recommended. The bridge remains a vital part of Lucerne’s fortifications history and a central point for exploring the city’s charming old town.
