Stadtkirche

The Stadtkirche is the town church of Liestal, the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and it stands in the old town on Kanonengasse. Like most Swiss town churches, it is a Protestant church belonging to the Reformed tradition, which means that its interior is plain and focused on preaching rather than on images and altars. Liestal adopted the Reformation in the sixteenth century, when the surrounding region followed the lead of Basel, and the church was stripped of its medieval decoration. Others include the town hall, the Obertor gate tower with its old arch and the narrow main street lined with painted and gabled houses.

The church is a modest stop, not a major attraction, and it is best treated as one element in a walk through the old town. Visitors can expect a short visit of around half an hour, enough to look at the architecture, the windows and the organ, and to enjoy a moment of quiet away from the street. It is a working church, so services, concerts and parish events take priority, and the doors may be closed outside certain hours. The congregation often uses the building for music, and concerts and organ recitals are held in many town churches in the region, so if you are interested in music it may be worth checking the schedule.

Nearby is Museum.BL, the cantonal museum, which is a good companion visit, because it explains the history, nature and culture of Basel-Landschaft, including the story of the split from Basel. The old town also offers cafés, bakeries and small shops, and the surrounding hills, such as the Schleifenberg, are reachable on foot for those who want a longer outing. The railway station is a short walk from the centre, and trains from Basel and other towns arrive frequently, so the town is easy to include in a day trip.

Entrance is normally free, but opening hours are not fixed in a way that visitors can rely on, so it is wise to ask at the tourist office or check the parish website before you go. The church suits those interested in Swiss history, Reformed architecture and quiet corners of old towns. Dress modestly, keep your voice low and avoid disturbing services. A visit pairs well with a walk through the old town, a coffee and a stop at the museum.
