Aussichtsturm Schleifenberg

The Schleifenberg is a wooded hill just outside Liestal, the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and the Aussichtsturm Schleifenberg is the lookout tower on its summit. It belongs to the hills of the Baselbieter Jura, a landscape of rounded ridges, beech forest, orchards and pasture that lies between the Rhine valley at Basel and the higher folds of the Jura to the south. At the top, a spiral staircase leads up the tower to a viewing platform above the treetops. On a clear day the view is wide: you look back over Liestal and the valley of the Ergolz, across the Basel region toward the Rhine and, depending on conditions, the Black Forest in Germany and the Vosges in France, with the chain of the Alps visible far to the south. The tower is a simple structure, not a monument, but it fulfils its purpose well and the platform is a good place for a picnic if the weather is fine. Weather matters a great deal: in haze or low cloud the distant views vanish, so it is worth choosing a clear day, ideally after rain when the air is crisp.

Access to the tower is not guaranteed at all times, since it is operated locally and opening arrangements can be limited, often to specific days. It is best to check current details with the local tourist office or the municipality before setting out, especially if you plan to go on a weekday. A hut or restaurant near the summit has served refreshments on certain days in the past, but this too varies, so carry water and a snack in case it is closed.

The walk suits hikers, families with older children and photographers, and it can be linked with other attractions in Liestal. The old town has a well-preserved medieval gate and a church, the Museum.BL covers the history and nature of the canton, and the Oristal singletrail is nearby for those who prefer a bike. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the town, depending on your pace and how long you stay at the top. In winter, paths can be icy or muddy, and the tower platform may be slippery, so take extra care.
