Rochers-de-Naye is the summit that closes the skyline behind Montreux, a rocky ridge at 2,042 metres in the Vaud Alps that offers one of the finest panoramas over Lake Geneva. It is reached by a rack railway that climbs from the lakeside town of Montreux through Glion and the meadows of the Jaman area to the top in about an hour, and the line, which has been in operation since the late 19th century, is part of the attraction. The track climbs steeply, with long gradients and sharp curves, and passengers go from vineyards beside the lake to a mountain landscape with bare rock and, in winter, deep snow, with views opening up the higher the train goes.

The summit area is compact and easy to explore. A station building has a restaurant and terrace, and short paths lead to viewpoints on the ridge, with a wide view of Lake Geneva spread out below, the Savoy Alps on the French shore, the Dents du Midi and, on very clear days, the white mass of Mont Blanc in the distance. Below the station, a small alpine garden, La Rambertia, grows hundreds of species of mountain plants, among them plants that thrive in the limestone, and it is free to visit in summer, with signs naming the plants. There is also a park where marmots live in summer, and the animals can often be seen on the grass near the paths, usually standing on their hind legs or whistling to warn of danger.

Hiking is a major reason to come in summer. Marked trails lead from the summit along the ridge and down to the Col de Jaman and other points, with walkers able to return by train from intermediate stations, and the walks are among the best in the area, with views at nearly every step. Experienced walkers can attempt longer routes and ridges, . In winter, the same slopes are used for snowshoeing, sledging and some ski touring.

Practical points matter. The air at 2,000 metres is cooler and windier than on the lake shore, and the weather can change quickly, so bring warm clothing and waterproofs even in summer. The railway runs all year, though timetables change with the season, and the first and last trains determine how long you can stay, so check the schedule.

The summit suits families, walkers, railway enthusiasts and anyone who wants a high viewpoint above Lake Geneva without a long climb. Go on a clear morning for the best views.
