Pâquis Market

The Pâquis is the district of Geneva that runs along the right bank of the lake north of the railway station, and it is one of the most lively and varied parts of the city. The name, from an old word for pasture, recalls its origin as meadows and market gardens outside the walls, and for a long time it was a working-class and port quarter, with fishermen, boatmen and craftsmen. Since the 19th century it has been a district of hotels, apartments and small businesses, and today it is Geneva’s most cosmopolitan neighbourhood, with residents and visitors from many countries.

The street scene is the attraction. The streets around the Rue de Lausanne and the lake are full of small shops, bakeries and grocers, with restaurants offering Middle Eastern food, among them Lebanese, Turkish, Thai, Ethiopian, Italian and other cuisines, often at lower prices than in the Old Town. Food is the thread that links the district, and many people come here to eat. Market stalls and small food shops sell fresh produce, spices, bread and sweets, and the area gives a feeling of everyday Geneva rather than the Geneva of banks and diplomats. Markets and special events take place at certain times and in certain squares, so check current information locally for days and hours.

The lake adds to the character. The Bains des Pâquis, the historic public bathing area on the jetty, is the district’s social heart, where people swim in summer, eat fondue in winter and meet friends throughout the year, and it has its own entry in the guide. From the pier, the yellow Mouettes shuttle boats cross the lake to the other bank, a short, cheap and pleasant trip with views of the Jet d’Eau, and the lakeside promenade leads to the Jardin Anglais and the Old Town. The district also has a lively nightlife, with bars and music venues, and it is one of the few places in Geneva where the street feels busy late into the evening.

Because the Pâquis is a real neighbourhood and not a sightseeing site, it works best as a wander. Walk along the lake, turn into the side streets, stop for a coffee or a meal and look at the shop windows. The area is close to the station and to the international organisations, so it is easy to fit into a day. It is generally safe, but like any busy urban district it has some rough corners, especially near the station at night, so take normal care.

The district suits food lovers, travellers who like street life and anyone who wants a break from the formal Geneva of the postcards. Come hungry, and come in the evening for the best atmosphere.
