Lakeside Castles Of Aargau

Aargau’s castles are mostly on hilltops, but Aargau has one famous Swiss water castle, but its best-known water castle stands near the shore of Lake Hallwil. Hallwyl Castle, the Schloss Hallwyl, lies at the northern end of the lake in the municipality of Seengen, set on islands in a small stream and surrounded by a moat. Its low, solid towers and walls rise directly from the water, and the approach across a stone bridge gives it the look of a classic medieval fortress, even though much of what is seen today was built and altered over several centuries. It is the most striking example of a moated castle in Switzerland and is the main reason to speak of the lakeside castles of the canton.

The castle belonged for many generations to the Hallwyl family, a noble house that rose in the Middle Ages and held the site for centuries before it passed to the canton. Because the owners lived here over a long period, the rooms show layers of use from different eras: great halls and chambers, kitchens and service areas, rooms furnished in later styles and displays that explain how an aristocratic family lived, worked and entertained. The castle is part of the museum network Museum Aargau, which also runs Lenzburg, Wildegg and Habsburg, and it presents exhibitions and events through the season. In contrast to those hilltop castles, which look out over valleys, Hallwyl’s setting at the water’s edge makes it a very different, enclosed and watery experience.

The surroundings add to the visit. Parkland and reed beds surround the castle, and walking paths lead from the castle to the lake shore at Seengen and Beinwil am See, with views over the water and the hills on either side. The area is a protected landscape where water birds nest, and the paths can be combined into a circular walk around the lake. The setting is lovely in spring and early summer, when the moat reflects green trees and flowering meadows, and in autumn, when mist gathers over the water.

Boats on Lake Hallwil connect several villages and give a way to arrive by water, and cyclists and walkers can reach the castle from the lakeside paths. Because opening times and events vary with the season, check the Museum Aargau website before you travel. Parts of the castle may close in winter.
