One of the cleaner lakes of the Swiss Plateau, Lake Hallwyl, or Hallwilersee, is a long, narrow lake in the Seetal valley, lying partly in the canton of Aargau and partly in Lucerne, between the Lucerne hinterland and the town of Lenzburg. It is one of the cleaner and calmer lakes of the Swiss Plateau, with a shoreline of reeds, meadows and low wooded hills rather than steep mountains, and its quiet water reflects a gentle, rural landscape. At the northern end, the stream that drains it, the Aabach, flows past Hallwyl Castle, the moated castle that is the lake’s best-known landmark.
A path of around twenty kilometres runs around the lake, close to the shore for much of the way, and it is one of the easiest long walks in the region. The route passes through reed zones that are protected as nature reserves, small harbours and villages such as Beinwil am See, Birrwil, Seengen and Meisterschwanden, and gives changing views over the water. It is flat and well marked, suitable for families and for cyclists, and you can walk part of it and return by boat, since boats of the lake’s shipping company call at landing stages on both sides. Scenic cruises run in the warmer months and sometimes include themed trips with food.
The lake is a recreation area in summer. Public beaches and swimming areas are found at several villages, the water is clean enough for swimming, and the lake is popular for sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling, as well as for rowing and pedal boats. Anglers fish for whitefish and other species from boats and shores. On warm weekends the beaches fill, so go early or choose a quieter stretch of the shore. In autumn and winter the lake is calm and misty, birdlife is rich, and the walking path is almost empty.
The lake also has a long human history. Traces of prehistoric lake dwellings have been found along the shore, a sign that people settled here thousands of years ago, and the castle and surrounding villages show later chapters. A visit to Hallwyl Castle is the natural cultural stop, and other entries cover the castle in more detail, so this one can focus on the lake as a place for walking, boating and swimming. The eastern shore is known for its sunsets, and lakeside restaurants give a pleasant place for dinner while the light fades.
Lake Hallwyl suits families, walkers, cyclists, swimmers and anyone who wants a quiet water landscape away from the mountain resorts. It is easy to reach by train and bus from Zurich, Lucerne or Aarau, and a day is enough to walk part of the shore, take a boat and visit the castle.
