Lake Ägeri, the Ägerisee, is a clear, blue-green lake in the canton of Zug in central Switzerland, a few kilometres from the city of Zug and separated from Lake Zug by a low ridge. It is a small lake, around seven square kilometres, about five kilometres long, and it lies in a green basin surrounded by gentle hills and forests, with the villages of Unterägeri and Oberägeri on its shores. The water is deep and clean, and on a clear day the surface takes on a vivid turquoise colour, which is the main reason the lake is popular as a swimming and leisure spot. The surrounding landscape of meadows, orchards and woods is calm and attractive, and the Alps are visible on the horizon.

The lake’s life is mostly centred on recreation. A public bathing area, the Lido at Unterägeri, offers a sandy beach, grassy areas, a water slide and diving platforms, and other public access points around the shore allow swimming from lawns and jetties. In summer, people sail, windsurf, paddle and fish, and the water is clean enough for swimming. A circular path runs around the lake, taking about three hours to walk, with good views and plenty of opportunities to stop for a meal or a swim, and cyclists use the same route. Boat services operate on the lake, which was historically a quiet farming lake, with a ship, the MS Aegeri, on scheduled cruises and special trips, such as family cruises with several stops, brunch and sunset outings, and an adventure boat for children.

History is also close to the lake. The battle of Morgarten, in which the early Swiss Confederates ambushed and defeated a Habsburg army in November 1315, took place on the lake’s southern shore, between the water and the Morgarten hillside. A themed Morgarten Trail leads walkers past a series of stations with audio stories and installations that explain the battle and the way it has been remembered, and the Morgarten monument, covered in its own entry, stands on a hill above the plain. In November each year, a large shooting festival commemorates the battle.

The lake is easy to reach from Zurich and Zug, by bus from the railway station, and the journey takes less than an hour. In winter, the area is known for cross-country skiing and winter walks on the surrounding hills, and in autumn, the colours of the woods are attractive. There are hotels, guesthouses and restaurants on the shore, and some simple snack bars at the beaches.

Lake Ägeri suits families, swimmers, walkers and cyclists, and anyone interested in the history of the Swiss Confederation. A day can combine a swim, the lake path and a visit to the Morgarten memorial.
