The Ägerisee lies in the canton of Zug at about 725 metres, a quiet lake in a pre-Alpine valley that most people pass without noticing. Around it, gentle hills, orchards, forests and small patches of preserved moorland make a landscape that is ideal for easy walking. The two villages on its shores, Unterägeri and Oberägeri, are the usual starting points, and the whole valley is compact enough that a short walk reveals many different views.
The lake path is the simplest option. A shoreline route links Unterägeri and Oberägeri and keeps close to the water for much of the way, with little climbing and plenty of benches for stopping. It suits families and anyone who wants a relaxed outing, and it can be shortened or lengthened by using the local bus or boat. In the evening the light on the water and the surrounding hills is especially pleasant.
Higher routes take walkers onto the ridges above the valley. Paths climb through forest and meadow to viewpoints where the lake appears far below, and on clear days the horizon opens toward the mountains of central Switzerland. Gottschalkenberg, one of the heights on the east side of the valley, is the focus of longer panorama routes, and paths along the ridge can be linked into full-day hikes. Mountain inns on the way offer refreshments, and it is worth checking their opening days before relying on them.
The longest classic walk leads from the valley toward Morgarten, at the southern end of the lake. This is the site of the battle of 1315, when Confederate fighters defeated a Habsburg army, an event that Swiss history regards as a founding moment of the Confederation. A monument marks the area, and a walk there joins landscape and history. The route is long and best done in good weather with a reasonable level of fitness.
Getting to the Ägerisee from Zurich is straightforward: a train to Zug and a local bus continue to Unterägeri in under an hour or so in total. The paths are generally well signposted, and the region is also popular for cycling and for swimming in summer. Autumn and spring bring quieter trails and clearer air, while winter paths can be icy and call for appropriate footwear.
