Lago Moesola is a small lake on the San Bernardino Pass, at around 2,000 metres, in the canton of Graubünden, and it is one of the most accessible high-mountain lakes on the route between northern Switzerland and Ticino. Unlike the lakes that need a long hike to reach, this one sits almost beside the road, close to the old hospice known as the Ospizio San Bernardino, so it can be enjoyed as a short stop or as a gentle walk.
The pass itself has been used for centuries as a crossing of the Alps, linking the Rhine valley and the Misox valley, and the hospice is a reminder of the travellers and traders who once needed shelter at this altitude. Today the old pass road is open to vehicles in the warmer months, usually from late spring to autumn, while the motorway tunnel carries the main traffic beneath the mountain throughout the year. That is why the pass is quiet: most people drive through the tunnel without seeing the high ground at all.
The surroundings are typical of the high Alps. The lake lies in a basin of bog and meadow, with small streams, rock outcrops, and scattered pines and larches at the edge of the tree line. The water is cold and clear, reflecting the sky and the surrounding slopes. A short path loops around the shore, taking roughly an hour at a relaxed pace, and the walking is easy enough for families and older visitors. In early summer the meadows are bright with alpine flowers, while autumn brings golden larches and a clearer atmosphere.
As a quiet halt, it works well. Picnics are easy to arrange, the setting is peaceful, and the contrast with the busy motorway only a few kilometres away is striking. Mountain weather can change within an hour, so carry a warm layer and rain protection, and note that snow can linger on the slopes into early summer.
The lake pairs well with other stops in the San Bernardino area, such as the mineral springs in the village and the nearby Lag de Pian Doss. Those who want a longer outing can follow marked trails across the pass and down toward the Misox valley, where the landscape and language start to feel Italian.
