The Kunstmuseum Basel is one of Switzerland's most important art museums, and its collection, which began when the city bought the Amerbach Cabinet in 1661, is often called the oldest municipally owned public art collection in the world. Located on St. Alban-Graben, the museum operates across three distinct venues: the Hauptbau, the Neubau, and the Gegenwart. This multi-site structure allows visitors to explore a vast chronological journey, from Old Masters and Classical Modernism to contemporary works.
The main building of 1936 houses the core collection, including the world's largest group of works by the Holbein family, paintings by Konrad Witz and a strong collection of 19th- and 20th-century art. Its Picasso holdings have a famous story: in 1967 Basel voters approved buying two of his paintings, and the delighted artist gave the city four more works. The new building, opened in 2016 and connected to the main building underground, hosts major temporary exhibitions, while the Gegenwart, by the Rhine, is devoted to contemporary art.
The museum is closed on Mondays, and reduced rates are available for students and young people. Visitors can enhance their experience with audioguides, guided tours, and workshops suitable for families. After exploring the galleries, guests can relax at the bistro located within the Hauptbau. The museum also provides a study room and library for those interested in deeper research. With its rich historical context and dynamic programming, the Kunstmuseum Basel offers a comprehensive cultural experience for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
