The Basel Town Hall, known locally as the Rathaus, stands as a striking centerpiece on the Marktplatz, serving as the seat of government for the Canton of Basel-Stadt. This historic landmark is defined by its vibrant bright red facade, which is adorned with gilded details and painted decoration that catch the eye of passersby. The main building was constructed between 1504 and 1514, soon after Basel joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501, and became an enduring symbol of civic pride.
The murals on the facade and in the arcaded courtyard were added and repainted over the following centuries, and the tower and the wing on the left were added in an extension between 1898 and 1904. The building is still the seat of the cantonal government and parliament, the Grosser Rat. Visitors can usually step into the courtyard during office hours, with its staircase, statue of the Roman founder Munatius Plancus and colourful wall paintings, and guided tours of the interior are offered on certain days. On the Marktplatz in front, a fresh produce market is held most mornings. Located centrally in Basel, the Town Hall is easily accessible and provides a quiet moment to appreciate the architectural beauty and historical significance of one of Switzerland’s most important civic buildings.
