Hinteri Egg

Hinteri Egg is the highest point of the canton of Basel-Landschaft, reaching about 1,169 metres above sea level, in the Jura hills on the southern edge of the canton, close to the boundary with Solothurn and to the Passwang area. It is not a dramatic peak. The summit is a wooded ridge crest with gentle slopes, and the Jura around it is a landscape of long forested ridges, pastures with scattered trees and deep valleys, quite different from the high Alps farther south. The fame of the place is mostly administrative: it is the roof of the canton, and a summit that people reach for the sake of ticking off the high point of the Basel-Land region.

The hike is the attraction. The usual approach from the north goes up the valley that runs through Bubendorf and Waldenburg, where a narrow-gauge railway climbs into the hills, and then continues by forest and pasture trails toward the ridge, with well-marked paths for most of the way. From Liestal the journey is a train ride to Waldenburg followed by a walk, and the route gains height steadily through beech and fir woods and small clearings where cattle graze. In spring the pastures are covered with wildflowers, in summer the woods give shade and in autumn the leaves turn gold and red.

At the top, expect a simple signpost, trees and a quiet atmosphere rather than a viewing platform. The surrounding woodland limits the views from the actual summit, but nearby clearings and ridge sections open up panoramas across the Jura to the north and, on a clear day, a view of the Alpine chain far to the south, with the Bernese Alps visible as a thin white line. There are no facilities at the top, so carry water, food and a rain jacket, and be prepared for weather that can change quickly at this altitude. In winter, the ridge can be icy or snow-covered, and snowshoe walking is possible when conditions allow.

The area around is part of a wider network of hiking routes and viewpoints, and neighbouring places include the Passwang pass and small villages with local inns. The nearby Liestal–Bubendorf Cycle Route and the Schleifenberg lookout tower belong to the same wider region of Basel-Landschaft.

The walk suits hikers with moderate fitness, peak-baggers who like to collect cantonal high points and people looking for a quiet day in the Jura. Check train times in advance, since the return journey can take some planning.
