Gruyères Castle, the Château de Gruyères, stands on a hill above the medieval town of Gruyères in the canton of Fribourg, and it is both a castle and a collection of art. The building dates mainly from the 13th and 15th centuries, when it was the seat of the Counts of Gruyère, a powerful family that ruled the area for centuries and whose emblem, a crane, still appears on the town’s coat of arms. The last count, Michel, went bankrupt in the 16th century, and his lands were divided between the cities of Bern and Fribourg, after which the castle passed to the bailiffs and later to private owners. The canton of Fribourg bought it in 1938 and turned it into the museum that visitors see today.
The collection is varied. The Knights’ Hall, a large room with a vaulted wooden ceiling, shows weapons, armour and furniture from the late Middle Ages, and wall paintings and stained-glass windows from different periods decorate other rooms. The castle’s romantic phase is one of its distinctive features. In the 19th century the castle was owned by two families, the Bovy and then the Balland, who restored it in a romantic spirit and invited painters to decorate the salons. The result is a series of rooms with landscape paintings by artists such as Camille Corot, who visited the area, and by Swiss painters, in a style that reflects the 19th-century taste for medieval settings and Alpine scenery. This layer of the castle’s history is as interesting as the medieval one, and it explains why the castle feels both old and curiously theatrical.
The castle also holds regional art, including late medieval sculptures and furniture, and exhibits that tell the story of the Counts and the region. A multimedia audio guide in several languages explains the rooms and objects, and a visit typically takes one to two hours. The garden beside the castle, laid out in a historic style, offers a place to sit and look over the surrounding pre-Alps, with views toward the Moléson mountain and the Fribourg hills. Seasonal opening times, events and ticket prices change, so check the official website before you go.
The setting adds to the visit. The town of Gruyères itself, a car-free medieval place with cobbled streets and ramparts, is famous for the cheese that carries its name, and cheese dairies and restaurants serving fondue and local specialities are close to the castle. The H.R. Giger Museum, a very different kind of attraction, is also in the town. Together they make Gruyères a rewarding day trip from Fribourg, Montreux or Bern.
It suits history lovers, families, art enthusiasts and anyone looking for a picture-book castle with an unexpected 19th-century chapter.
