Rising to almost 2,930 metres above the Rhone valley, the Eggishorn is one of the great balcony viewpoints of the Valais Alps. It sits above the villages of Fiesch and Fiescheralp, in the upper Goms district, and its steep eastern flank looks straight down onto the Aletsch Glacier, the longest ice stream in the Alps. The surrounding landscape belongs to the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch area, and from the summit it is easy to understand why.

A cable car climbs from Fiesch to Fiescheralp, and a second lift continues from there to the Eggishorn summit, so there is no need for a full mountaineering day to reach the top. The ride itself reveals the valley shrinking beneath the cabin while the peaks open out ahead. At the summit, a viewing platform and a mountain restaurant make it a comfortable place to stay a while. The view reaches the glacier's long tongue, the broad ice basin of Konkordiaplatz where several glaciers meet, and a crowd of summits behind, with Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn visible far to the south and west on clear days.

Light changes the experience. Early in the day the ice appears blue and white against the shadowed rock, while late afternoon warms the peaks and lengthens shadows across the glacier. Cloud can arrive quickly in the mountains, so it pays to check weather and webcam conditions before heading up, and to carry warm layers whatever the temperature is in Fiesch.

A visit is also a starting point for walks. Paths lead from the summit area toward the Märjelen Lake, a glacial reservoir beside the Aletsch ice where small icebergs sometimes calve into the water, and the Gletscherstube is a mountain restaurant in the same area. Hikers will find the going straightforward in summer, though higher paths can hold snow into early season and should be treated as alpine terrain.

Note that the Eggishorn belongs to the Fiesch side of the Goms, not to the Binn valley, which lies in a separate side valley further east and is known for its minerals and quiet villages. The two make a good pair for a longer stay in the region, but they are reached from different directions.
