The Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, stands as a monumental testament to Benedictine history in the heart of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Located near Lake Constance, this complex features a Baroque cathedral and the world-renowned Abbey Library, known locally as the Seelenapotheke. The library’s core collection includes 2,100 manuscripts, while its stunning non-ecclesiastical Baroque hall houses approximately 50,000 books and the 2,700-year-old Egyptian mummy Shepenese. Visitors can explore the site’s rich cultural legacy amidst historic burgher houses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

For travelers, the Abbey Library, Vaulted Cellar, and Exhibition Space offer a cohesive experience. Access is available via a combined ticket, priced at CHF 18 for adults and CHF 12 for students, with free entry for children under 16 accompanied by parents. Groups of ten or more benefit from discounted rates. The site operates from 10 am to 5 pm between October and June, extending to 6 pm during July and September, with last admission 15 minutes before closing. Guided tours are available Monday to Friday from 9 am upon request. Note that the Abbey Library closes for three weeks during November and December.
