St. Gallen’s Abbey District, known in German as the Stiftsbezirk, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historical centre of the city. It grew around the monastery that began in the 7th century as the hermitage of Gallus, an Irish monk who is said to have settled in the valley around 612, and the city takes its name from him. A Benedictine abbey was established here in the 8th century, and over the following centuries it became one of the leading centres of learning in Europe, with a school, a scriptorium and a library that attracted scholars from far away. The monastery was dissolved in the early 19th century, but the buildings survive and the district remains the visual and cultural core of St. Gallen.

The most famous part is the Abbey Library, which holds Switzerland’s oldest library collection and is regarded as one of the most important monastery libraries in the world. Its Baroque Hall, built in the 18th century and decorated with rococo stucco and ceiling paintings, is among the most beautiful library rooms in Europe, and visitors usually put on felt overshoes to protect the floor. Shelves hold thousands of volumes, among them manuscripts from the early Middle Ages, including some of the oldest surviving German-language texts, and the famous Plan of St. Gall, a Carolingian drawing of an ideal monastery from the early 9th century. A Greek inscription above the door calls the library the place of healing for the soul. The library also houses an Egyptian mummy, a surprise in a Swiss monastery that attracts many visitors.

Next door stands the Cathedral of St. Gall, the former abbey church, a Baroque church with twin towers, a richly decorated interior and a long nave, built in the 18th century. Together with the library, it forms the centre of the district, which also includes the old abbey courtyards and the Gallusplatz. Other places linked to the abbey, such as the Textile Museum, the City Park and the Mühleggbahn funicular to the Three Ponds, are within walking distance.

Practical arrangements matter in the Abbey’s library, since it is sensitive to crowds and light. Opening times, ticket prices and discounts vary through the year, and short closures for events or exhibitions are possible, so check the current details on the official website. The library hall has its own access rules, with guided tours offered at certain times, and photography rules apply inside, so be ready to follow staff instructions.

The district suits history buffs, book lovers, architecture fans and anyone who enjoys a place where a thousand years of European learning are within a short walk. Allow a few hours for the library, the cathedral and a stroll through the old town around it.
