Day hike exploring a landslide-formed lake and virgin forest
A full-day exploration of the secluded Lac de Derborence, focusing on its unique geological history formed by massive landslides, the surrounding virgin forest, and the tranquil alpine atmosphere. This itinerary includes hiking the wooden walkways, visiting the visitor center, and enjoying the local fauna.
Travel to Derborence
Drive or take public transport from Sion or Martigny to the Derborence valley. The journey offers scenic views of the Valais region. Parking is available at the designated area near the lake.
Visitor Center & Geological Exhibition
Start your visit at the modern visitor center. Learn about the massive rockslides of 1714 and 1749 that blocked the Derbonne river, creating the lake. View exhibits on the local flora, fauna, and the literary significance of the area, including Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz’s novel.
Hiking the Wooden Walkways
Explore the protected wetlands and virgin forest via the extensive network of wooden walkways. This easy, intermediate-friendly hike allows you to observe rare biodiversity, including ibexes, marmots, and bearded vultures, while enjoying mirror-like reflections of the alpine scenery on the lake.
Lunch at Refuge du Lac de Derborence
Enjoy a traditional Swiss lunch at the lakeside refuge. The restaurant offers a tranquil atmosphere with views of the lake. Try local Valais specialties such as raclette or fondue if available.
Lakeside Relaxation and Nature Walk
Spend the afternoon relaxing by the water's edge or taking a gentle stroll around the perimeter of the lake. This is an ideal time for photography, reading, or simply soaking in the unspoiled natural beauty and silence of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park.
Exploring the Derbonne River Banks
Walk along the banks of the Derbonne river, now flowing freely below the lake level. Observe the dramatic rock faces and the lush vegetation that thrives in this high valley environment.
Afternoon Snack and Coffee
Return to the refuge for coffee, hot chocolate, or a light snack while enjoying the late afternoon light on the lake.
Departure from Derborence
Begin your journey back to your accommodation or next destination, carrying memories of the serene and geologically unique landscape of Derborence.
Where to stay: For a 1-day trip, no accommodation is needed. If extending the stay, consider lodging in nearby villages like Sion, Martigny, or Les Diablerets for easy access to the Valais region.
Getting around: A car is recommended for flexibility, though public transport (train to Sion/Martigny, then bus) is available. Parking is available at the lake.
