One-day exploration of Brienzwiler and Lake Brienz
A relaxing day exploring the charming village of Brienzwiler, taking the historic cogwheel railway to Brienz, and enjoying the scenic beauty of Lake Brienz and the surrounding Alps.
Morning Stroll in Brienzwiler
Start your day with a gentle walk through the picturesque Brienzwiler village. Admire the traditional wooden chalets, visit the local church, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. This is a great time for photography of the village architecture against the backdrop of the Brienzer Rothorn.
Scenic Train Ride to Brienz
Take the historic Brienz Rothorn Bahn (BRB) cogwheel railway from Brienzwiler to Brienz. This narrow-gauge steam or diesel train offers stunning views of the valley and is a heritage experience in itself. The ride takes approximately 20-25 minutes.
Explore Brienz Old Town
Arrive in Brienz and wander through the historic old town. Visit the Brienz Railway Museum if interested, or simply stroll along the main street lined with shops selling traditional Swiss crafts, particularly Brienz woodcarvings. Enjoy the view of Lake Brienz from the promenade.
Lunch by the Lake
Enjoy a traditional Swiss lunch at a lakeside restaurant in Brienz. Try local specialties like Rösti or a fondue if the weather permits outdoor seating. The view of the turquoise lake and the surrounding peaks makes for a perfect dining experience.
Lake Brienz Cruise
Board a paddle steamer or modern boat for a scenic cruise on Lake Brienz. The turquoise waters are famous, and the cruise offers breathtaking views of the Giessbach Falls and the surrounding mountains. You can choose a short cruise or a longer one depending on your schedule.
Visit Giessbach Falls
Disembark at the Giessbach station. Take a short walk or the funicular (if operating) to view the majestic Giessbach Falls. The water cascades down 500 meters into the lake, creating a spectacular sight. You can also visit the historic Grand Hotel Giessbach if open.
Return to Brienzwiler
Take the train back from Brienz to Brienzwiler. This allows you to see the scenery from a different perspective as the sun begins to set. Arrive back in the village for a quiet evening.
Where to stay: Stay in Brienzwiler for a quiet, authentic alpine experience, or in Brienz for more dining and shopping options. Both are well-connected by the BRB railway.
Getting around: The Brienz Rothorn Bahn (BRB) is the primary transport link between Brienzwiler and Brienz. Purchase a day ticket or check if your Swiss Travel Pass covers this route (it usually does for the standard gauge, but check for the cogwheel railway specific rules). Boats on Lake Brienz are included in the Swiss Travel Pass.
