Schwarzsee, or Lac Noir, lies in the Fribourg Prealps in the Sense district, a short drive from the city of Fribourg and with the Bernese Oberland just beyond the ridge. The lake sits at a little over 1,000 meters, surrounded by cliffs, rolling meadows and dense forest. Its name, meaning Black Lake, comes from the dark reflections cast by the surrounding mountains and trees on its clear water.
History and Heritage The Schwarzsee region has long been a favourite retreat for locals and visitors. Its history is rooted in alpine farming and cheese production, which are still alive in the mountain dairies and rustic inns. The lake and its surroundings have inspired legends and folklore, including tales of dragons and healing waters, and for a time in the 19th century the shore was known for a small spa using cold sulphur springs. The Alp-Schaukäserei Riggisalp shows traditional cheese-making and offers regional specialities to taste, and the pastures behind the lake are still grazed in summer.
Main Attractions The lake itself is the main attraction, with a scenic walking trail of about four kilometres that circles the shore, offering panoramic views and access to quiet coves for swimming or picnics. In summer, the cool water is welcome for a dip, and pedal boats and rowboats can be rented. The Schwarzsee Toboggan Run is a highlight for families, with fast rides down the hillside and wide alpine views, and the MTB flow trail of Schwarzseeland gives mountain bikers a purpose-built descent.
In winter Schwarzsee turns into a snowy wonderland. The famous Ice Palaces are a must-see, with coloured ice sculptures and lit tunnels that delight visitors of all ages. The artificial ice rink and the Swiss Snow Kids Village make the area popular with families learning to skate or ski. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter hiking are available, with marked trails through peaceful forests and meadows.
Activities Schwarzsee is a fine place for anyone who likes to be outside. Hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the surrounding mountains, leading to viewpoints such as the Euschelspass or the Brecca Gorge, a wild glacial hollow. Paragliding, mountain biking and fishing are popular in the warmer months. Goat farms and alpine dairies in the region offer chances to learn about local agriculture and taste fresh cheese and other products.
Getting There Schwarzsee is reached by car from Fribourg in about 30 minutes or from Bern in about an hour, with parking near the lake. Public transport is available too, with regular buses from Fribourg to Schwarzsee, which makes it easy to reach without a car. The area is well signposted, and most attractions are within walking distance of the lakefront.
Seasonal Advice June to September is the best period, when the weather is mild and the lake is inviting for swimming, hiking and boating. Summer daytime temperatures average around 21 degrees Celsius. December to March has a magical mood, with snow sports and the Ice Palaces, though some activities depend on snow and ice conditions. Spring and autumn are quieter, with changing colours and fewer people. In every season Schwarzsee’s natural beauty and welcoming mood make it a rewarding outing for all ages.
