Wenkenhof Manor Estate in Riehen is a remarkable example of Swiss heritage, blending centuries of history with elegant landscape design. Perched on a hillside overlooking Basel, the estate consists of two main villas—Alte Wenken (Old Wenken) and Neue Wenken (New Wenken)—surrounded by expansive parklands. The origins of Wenkenhof trace back to the Middle Ages, when the land was first recorded as “Wenkenberg” and served as a farming estate. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of abbeys, monasteries, and private owners, each leaving their mark on its architecture and gardens.

Today, Wenkenhof is often called Basel’s “miniature Versailles” for its beautifully maintained French garden, open to the public every Sunday. The estate also features an English park, dotted with sculptures by renowned artist Richard Serra, which is accessible on Sundays as well. Visitors can stroll along symmetrical pathways, admire the formal flowerbeds, or relax on the terrace with sweeping views of Basel.
