Vevey likes to be called the Pearl of the Swiss Riviera, and a walking tour is a good way to see why. The town lies on the north shore of Lake Geneva, at the foot of the terraced vineyards of Lavaux and with the mountains of the Chablais across the water, and its setting, with the water in front and the hills behind, is very pleasant. A holiday-style walk here is a gentle, flat stroll in which the pace is part of the pleasure, and it works in all seasons, from sunny summer evenings to the lights and decorations of the winter holiday period.
The lakefront promenade is the backbone of the walk. A broad quay with trees, benches and flowerbeds runs along the shore, past the landing stage where lake steamers call, and it gives an easy walk with constantly changing views of the water and the mountains. The bronze statue of Charlie Chaplin, who lived in the hills above Vevey for the last 25 years of his life, stands on the quay, and visitors often take their picture beside him. Not far away, in the water by the Alimentarium, stands a giant fork, a playful monument that nods to the town’s long association with the food industry. Chaplin’s World, the museum in his former home above the town, can be reached by bus, and it is a good addition to a day in Vevey.
The Old Town lies behind the quay and has narrow lanes with small shops, cafés and bakeries. The Grand Place, a large open square beside the lake, hosts a market on certain days, where visitors can see local fruit, vegetables, cheese and flowers, and it is a pleasant place to sit. In the winter holiday season, the town is decorated with lights, and markets and events bring a festive atmosphere to the lakefront, so check the calendar if that interests you. The vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site, come down to the lake just east of Vevey, and the local white wine, made from the Chasselas grape, is the classic accompaniment to the cheese of the region, and walking tours often include a taste or a recommendation.
The walk is free if you do it on your own, and organised tours with a guide are available for those who want commentary, in which case prices and durations vary and booking may be needed. Museums and special attractions, such as the Alimentarium and Chaplin’s World, charge admission and have their own opening times. Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes are cobbled in places, and bring a jacket for the breeze from the lake.
The walk suits couples, families, older visitors and anyone who likes a slow stroll with views. Allow two hours, and finish with a drink on the terrace of a lakeside café.
