Vevey is a small Swiss town on the north shore of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Vaud, in the middle of the terraced vineyards of the Lavaux and the Riviera, and a walking tour is a good way to see it. The town’s centre is compact and flat along the lake, so the main sights can be walked in an afternoon, and a local guide can give the context that a visitor on their own would miss. The setting is the first thing you notice: the water, the line of the Alps on the opposite shore and the vineyards rising behind the town.
A typical route starts at the Grand Place, the large square beside the lake, where a market is held on certain days, and it follows the quays to the town’s most famous resident, who stands in bronze. The statue of Charlie Chaplin on the lakeside promenade shows the comedian in his Tramp costume, and it recalls his long residence at Corsier-sur-Vevey, a few kilometres up the hill, where he lived from 1953 until his death. Just along the waterfront, a giant fork stands in the lake near the Alimentarium, the food museum, a sculpture that refers to Vevey’s role as the home of the Nestlé company, which has had its headquarters here since the 19th century.
The Old Town lies behind the lakefront and has narrow lanes, old houses and small squares, with cafés and shops, many of them local. The town’s identity is linked to wine. Vevey hosts the Fête des Vignerons, a great festival of winegrowers that takes place only about once every twenty years, with a huge procession and pageant in the Grand Place, and that is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The vine-growing brotherhood that organises it has its home in the town, and the festival’s history is a good topic for a guide.
A good guide will also talk about the Russian community, writers and artists who spent time here in the 19th century, and about how Vevey became a destination for visitors long before modern tourism. The lakeside promenade is a pleasant place to walk, with trees, benches and views of the Alps, and the walk can be extended along the shore toward Montreux or up into the vineyards. Tours of this type usually last about two hours, and they are offered in several languages, so check what is on offer.
The walk suits first-time visitors, families, couples and anyone who likes a relaxed introduction to a place before exploring on their own. Combine it with the Alimentarium, Chaplin’s World and a lunch by the lake.
