Tramdepot

The Altes Tramdepot, the Old Tram Depot, is a restaurant and brewery on the steep slope beside Bern’s BärenPark, on Grosser Muristalden, directly above the Aare River and facing the Old Town. As the name says, it occupies a former tram depot, a heavy stone building from the early days of Bern’s tram network, and the brewery is built into its industrial shell. Its position is the best part: a large terrace on the hillside gives one of the classic views over the roofs and spire of the Old Town and the bend of the river, and it is a short walk from the Nydegg Bridge.

Inside, the character of the old building has been kept, with brick, metal and high ceilings, and the brewing equipment is visible, including large copper kettles. The brewery produces its own beers, from standard lager and pale styles to seasonal and special brews, and you can taste them in the restaurant or on the terrace. The menu is broad and designed to appeal to groups: Swiss favourites, dishes with a Central European tradition, sharing platters and a few Asian-inspired choices. It is a place for a long lunch or an evening meal rather than a quick coffee, and the atmosphere is informal and often busy.

The setting makes it easy to combine with other sights. The bears at the BärenPark are right next door, and you can look down on the enclosure from some parts of the terrace, while the Nydegg church, the Matte quarter and the Aare riverside are a few minutes away. After a morning in the Old Town, the depot is a good spot to rest, and in the evening the view of the lit Old Town is a draw. In warm weather the terrace fills early, so arrive before the lunch and dinner rushes or reserve a table where possible. Facilities generally include lift access and family-friendly arrangements, and dogs are often welcome, though you should check the current policy and opening days.

The venue is popular with local groups and visitors alike, and it hosts events from time to time. Opening hours vary through the week, and the kitchen may close earlier than the bar, so look up current times before planning a meal. Prices are those of a mid-range city brewery.

It suits families, groups of friends, couples and anyone who wants a beer with a view in an atmospheric building. A visit takes an hour or two, longer if you settle in on the terrace for an evening.
