The Sanctuary of the Madonna d’Ongero is a small pilgrimage church on a wooded slope above the village of Carona, on the southern flank of Monte San Salvatore, a short distance from Lugano in southern Switzerland. Carona is one of the most attractive villages in the Lugano area, a terraced hillside community known for its old stone houses, its churches and the fact that many of its sons became architects, sculptors and painters who worked across Italy and Europe from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The sanctuary belongs to that tradition of devotion and craftsmanship, and it is a quiet place set apart from the village.

Sanctuaries of this kind are a feature of Ticino, where pilgrimage to churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary has been a part of religious life for centuries. They usually stand on a hill or at the edge of a village, reached by a path lined with small chapels or shrines, and they developed after a local devotion to a sacred image. The Madonna d’Ongero follows this pattern. The church is modest in size, with an interior decorated with painted scenes and richly worked stucco in the Baroque taste of the region, which is a typical contrast in Ticino churches between plain exteriors and elaborate interiors. The vaults and walls carry painted and moulded decoration, and the atmosphere is calm and slightly dim, with the smell of old stone.

The surroundings add to its appeal. The path to the sanctuary leads through chestnut woods and across meadows, with glimpses of the lake and the mountains, and it makes a pleasant short walk from the village. The area has a long reputation for quiet and beauty, and writers and artists have been drawn to the neighbourhood of Lugano for generations, so the sanctuary sits in a landscape with a literary and artistic background. The church is small, and it is best visited quietly and respectfully, since it is a place of worship.

Access and opening arrangements for small sanctuaries often vary, and the church may be open only at certain times or on certain days, so check locally before making a special trip. Carona itself has other sights, including its parish church and the San Grato botanical park, a landscaped park above the village with rhododendrons and views, and mountain biking paths cross the hillside. The village can be reached by bus from Lugano, and it is a good half-day outing.

The sanctuary suits walkers, lovers of Ticino’s churches and those who enjoy quiet places. Allow an hour for the walk and the visit, and wear shoes suitable for woodland paths.
