Madrisa is the family-oriented mountain area above the village of Saas, in the Prättigau valley, on the opposite side of the valley from the main ski slopes of Klosters. It is reached from the Klosters side by a gondola that rises to a mountain station at about 1,900 metres, and it takes its name from the Madrisahorn, a peak of around 2,800 metres that rises on the ridge above. The area is known as a place for children and families, and it is quieter and more relaxed than the large ski areas on the other side of Klosters, with a different character: smaller, sunnier and more intimate.
The main attraction for children is Madrisaland, a large adventure playground built on the mountainside around the upper station. It has slides of various lengths, including one of more than a hundred metres, as well as climbing walls, ropes, balancing equipment, sandpits and play areas designed to use the natural slope. Playgrounds of this kind are common in Swiss mountain resorts, but the setting here, with open meadows, mountain views and a sunny terrace, gives it a particular charm. Parents can sit in the restaurant or on the grass and keep an eye on their children while enjoying a drink or meal.
In winter, Madrisa becomes a small ski area suited to families, beginners and intermediate skiers, with gentle slopes, a children's area with moving carpets and ski school facilities, and slopes that are generally sunny and uncrowded. A toboggan run is available for those who prefer sledging, and the area has a reputation for being easy and safe for small children. The lifts are modern, with comfortable chairs, and mountain restaurants serve hearty food. The ski area is separate from the main Davos Klosters network, so it is ideal for families who want a quiet day on the snow or for beginners who do not want to compete with fast skiers on busier slopes.
In summer, the area is a base for walking and family outings. Trails lead from the upper station across alpine pastures to viewpoints and mountain huts, and some are suitable for children and prams. The Madrisahorn can be climbed by experienced walkers. Mountain biking is also possible on selected routes. The region is known for its flowers in early summer, when the meadows are covered with colour, and for its large number of marmots, which can be seen on the slopes.
The gondola station is reached from Klosters by a short bus ride or by car, and a car park is available at the valley station. Opening dates, lift timetables and prices change from year to year, so check the operator's website before you go. The area suits families with young children, beginners and anyone who wants a quiet mountain day. Bring warm clothing even in summer, since it is cooler at altitude, and sun protection. Allow half a day to a full day for the playground and a walk.
