Freibad Marzili (Bern)

Freibad Marzili is Bern’s most beloved open-air swimming complex, set in a scenic riverside park directly beneath the Swiss Parliament building. Easily accessible by public transport or a short walk from the city center, Marzili offers a refreshing escape during the warm months from May to September. The lido features a range of pools, including an eight-lane 50-meter lap pool, a diving pool with 1- and 3-meter platforms, a non-swimmer pool, and a paddling pool for children. There are also dedicated areas for women (“Paradiesli”) and men (“Männerbad”), both of which allow nude sunbathing.

Surrounded by 10,000 square meters of green lawns, Marzili is a popular spot for sunbathing, picnicking, and relaxing with friends or family. The adjacent playground keeps younger visitors entertained, while on-site cafés and eateries provide snacks and drinks throughout the day. For strong swimmers, the highlight is the opportunity to enter the River Aare from marked spots and float downstream—a classic Bernese summer tradition.

Admission to Freibad Marzili is free, though there are charges for cabin rentals and valuables lockers. The pool is open daily from early morning to evening, making it easy to fit a swim or riverside break into your Bern itinerary. With its lively atmosphere, historic roots dating back to 1782, and stunning city views, Marzili is a quintessential Bern summer experience.
